This is why we can't have nice things in the rust belt.

I found a piece of car/truck laying in the grocery store parking lot last night. This is why we only see cool old cars a few months a year, and 20+ year old plebian cars are virtually all gone.

Kinja'd!!!

Foot for scale.

Kinja'd!!!

Does it scare you that this vehicle is still driving around?

I can’t even tell where that would fall off of. And yes, it’s terrifying.

Looks like the end of a front subframe rail off something like a Mustang.

Looks like something that would have fallen off the bed of my truck. It's more rust than truck at this point.

I was out walking with the missus yesterday and we found the threaded half of a spark plug on the side of the road. You’d think you’d miss that.

I had a bondo bucket ‘89 S-10 for a little while that would shed little bits of rust every time I shut the tailgate. I sold it to a buddy who used it as a work truck for another 5-6 years. Best $1000 he ever spent.

That has to be from a very rotten truck.

We have yearly inspection in Finland and rust holes aren’t allowed. The inspection guys don’t always find everything and sometimes very big issues are surprisingly found on some (unlucky) year.

Pretty much all ‘60s unibody Fords are set up that way, so it could be from several different ones. Mavericks have a little pocket in the floor right over that subframe end, so that could be a possibility.

My buddy had a ‘99 Dakota V6 that developed a habit of shooting out it’s spark plugs at the ripe old age of 5 years and 40k miles ... That thing was a POS.

That was my first guess, but it could be part of a unibody with a now giant hole.

We have no inspections in my state, and you should see some of the rusty hunks of crap people drive around in.

Well, they made two and a half million first-gen Mustangs, and the Fox ones also have something like this going on... so do a good number of other unibody cars, but the Ford ones are a decently good suspect.

Being from the rust free southwest, massive rust issues on cars facinates me to no end especally on newer cars.

As someone who is going to move to the midwest for school the next two years I am curious, what do you do to your vehicles for rust prevention? Krown, Ziebart?

Oh no doubt, there are tons of unibody cars this could’ve dropped off of.

Some people swear by undercoating, and others say it makes the problem worse. Really the best thing you can do IMO is go to a car for wash with an underbody sprayer whenever it gets above freezing.

Ultimately any vehicle driven through Midwestern winters will rust some eventually. My ‘06 Sierra that I’ve had since new is starting to pop a bit of cosmetic rust. I’m not happy about it, but such is life.

Wash them when it warms up, and replace every few years with a new beater.

My ‘06 Sierra I’ve had since new is starting to pop a bit of cosmetic rust. GM minivans are notorious for rusting out. It makes me mad when I somebody driving their kids around in a van with no rocker panels left. They were horrible in accidents when they were new, now they’ll fold up like a beer can.

No problem. If you’ve got the means and the space, you could always do the winter beater thing.

Whereabouts are you moving?

Yep - I’m seeing a chicken left on the rotisserie all night and then put in the Manager’s Special bin for 99 cents. Two wings, a breast bone, but where is the gizzard?

Ann Arbor MI. I do not have said luxury unfortunatly. I might bring my grand marquis which I’m not that attached too and suffer with RWD instead of bringing my land cruiser. TBD at the moment, have a month to swap the engine in the cruiser - I think that will seal the deal one way or the other.

I figured as a student that was probably out of the question. As fun as 4wd is in the snow, I get around just fine in RWD pickup trucks. If you’re planning to keep the Land Cruiser forever, I’d bring the Grandpa Marquis instead.

Just make sure you have some decent tires, and toss a couple bags of sand in the trunk. It’s be a good idea to carry a shovel and a tow strap around just in case. It’s easy to find someone with a 4z4 to pull you out, having the strap with you will make sure that the gear is at hand. I’ve only needed a pull out once in 15 Chicago winters with a RWD pickup, but that night really would’ve sucked if I didn’t have that strap.
